Nearly every write-up of Black Messiah includes the phrase ‘long-awaited’ because it’s so true. D’Angelo’s last album, Voodoo, came out fourteen years ago. Fourteen! Constant speculation arose in all those years regarding why a follow-up was taking so long: intense perfectionism, struggles with dependency, the fear of not meeting almost impossibly high expectations. But whatever happens to be true, Black Messiah has finally come.
The refreshingly organic album is innovative in its simplicity, showcasing D’Angelo’s talent for quietly and effectively melding R&B, soul, and funk into almost structureless, river-flowing rhythms. Check out ‘Ain’t That Easy’ and decide for yourself whether Black Messiah was worth the wait.
