In an attempt to stay hip and relevant in the face of Apple’s popularity, Microsoft has released a onslaught of inane adverts featuring dopey young people this year. Well, step aside, those who ‘invented’ Windows 7. There’s a new clown in town.
Microsoft’s latest advert has a college aged American kid saying the following (which I paraphrase): So, I’m studying abroad in Germany to try to get a little ‘culture’ (said sarcastically; why?) but one thing I don’t get is their humour.
So he uses his Windows 7 to access his videos from home to be entertained by whilst abroad. Windows 7: Making it so you really don’t ever have to step outside your bubble!
And this is why the rest of the world doesn’t really like America. Why the dig at German humour? Perhaps if Mr. My Way or the Highway gave it a chance, he would understand and enjoy it. However, thanks to Windows 7, he won’t ever have to do that. Thanks, Microsoft.
The Urchins have all studied and lived abroad, and hold those experiences very dear. I can guarantee that we wouldn’t have gotten as much from our time abroad, however, if we had spent it immersing ourselves in American things from home instead of embracing the cultures around us.
This advert highlights some Americans’ isolationist, better-than-thou mentality. Even if someone does go abroad, they won’t bother to learn about or appreciate the differences in the culture around them. They will question why everything isn’t the same as in America, assuming that the American way is the better way.
If you are planning to study or live abroad, please don’t take the Microsoft Moron approach. Get out, meet new people, try new things, and for the love of god watch the Eurovision Song Contest. I pinky promise you will get, and love, that humour.
