Dear Urchins and friends of Urchins,
We hope you won’t mind if we veer a bit off our normal path today. Since last Tuesday, the earthquake in Haiti (the western hemisphere’s most impoverished nation) has been heavy on our minds. Though a week has passed, the urgency of this situation has not diminished. People are still being recovered from underneath the rubble, and many people with severe injuries are still without medical aid. According to the European Commission, the death toll is estimated at 200,000, with 80,000 buried in mass graves. An estimated 2 million people are homeless and 250,000 are in need of urgent aid. Now, you may know from previous posts that the Urchins are pence pinchers at heart and of no great means. We know that many of you are in similar situations. However, please consider donating even just one dollar to one of the following American Institute of Philanthropy’s top-rated charities, which ensures that your efforts will be used efficiently to help Haiti in its time of great need.
